The Spider Librarian
Asher’s faerie clan, the Mushroom clan, has a library of sorts, which houses a great deal of very old, very obscure information. Those who are curious and invited to peruse the library are welcome to help themselves to the contents of the shelves (provided the books are not removed from the room), but finding what one needs can be a challenge— the library is much like the TARDIS— far larger on the inside. To find precisely the thing one is looking for, especially in a timely fashion, a scholar may request the aid of the librarian. At first glance, she is a mural painted on the ceiling, but when one calls out to her, or approaches her, she pushes away from her painted self and becomes flesh. There is a cost for consulting the librarian, however; in exchange for her help, she charges the inquirer a small piece of their mortal soul, which appears in candied, wrapped form in the inquirer’s hand once the request has been made. True fae are exempt from this cost, but mortals must pay.
Asher, being a mortal human, but still a minor ruling lord of the clan, has a special arrangement with the spider librarian: he must still pay her her fee of candied soul…. but he’s free to use a blood relative’s soul.
